Minimum Wage Determination Commission Sets First Minimum Wage of 2025
The Minimum Wage Determination Commission convened today at 16.00 to establish the first minimum wage of 2025. Headed by Tahir Serhat, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the commission aimed to determine an accurate figure that considers both workers and employers within the context of inflation.
In attendance were representatives from the government, labor unions, and employers, including Ahmet Serdaroğlu from the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Labor (Hür-İş) and Cengiz Alp from the Turkish Cypriot Employers’ Union. Serhat emphasized the importance of finding a balance that does not impose hardships on either workers or employers amidst economic difficulties.
Serdaroğlu expressed concerns about the impact of low cost of living rates on minimum wage calculations and called for action from the main opposition party to address this issue. He also criticized the government for failing to control price increases, which he believes will harm businesses in the long run.
Alp highlighted the challenges of dealing with high inflation rates in Turkey and expressed hope for a decrease in inflation figures to single digits. He assured that the commission will strive to make the best decision for 80-85 percent of society.
The previous minimum wage, set on September 1, 2024, was gross 40,436 TL and net 35,180 TL. The commission’s decision on the new minimum wage for 2025 will have far-reaching implications for the workforce and the economy as a whole.
