Minister Bóka Calls for Debate on EU’s Ukraine Policy

Hungary Calls for a Strategic Debate on EU Policy Regarding Ukraine
Hungary’s EU Affairs Minister, János Bóka, has called for a strategic debate on the European Union’s policy regarding Ukraine, emphasizing the need to address the challenges posed by the country’s agricultural potential and market integration.
In an interview with the Polish daily Republic, Bóka highlighted Ukraine’s significant agricultural capacity, noting that it has more arable land than Italy’s total area and the average Ukrainian farm is more than 1,000 hectares in size. This has resulted in an imbalance in Central European markets as Ukrainian products flood the region.
Bóka emphasized that Ukraine would be the biggest beneficiary of the common agricultural policy and a recipient of cohesion funds, raising questions about whether the European market could keep pace with Ukraine’s integration.
The minister also outlined the priorities of Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency, which include addressing European competitiveness, demographic challenges, cohesion policy, migration, European security and defense policy, and EU enlargement.
Bóka further addressed concerns about the Hungarian Council Presidency, stating that the European Parliament is the only institutional actor with political reservations. He also stressed that any political confrontation with the European Commission must be addressed within the competences enshrined in the treaties.
The call for a strategic debate on the EU’s policy regarding Ukraine comes as Hungary prepares to take on the EU presidency next year, with a focus on addressing key challenges facing the region and fostering cooperation with Ukraine.
