Minister of National Education Discusses Changes in Disciplinary Regulation
Minister of National Education, Nazım Çavuşoğlu, recently made a statement on the changes in the teacher unions disciplinary Regulation. In a conversation with BRT, Minister Çavuşoğlu shed light on the reasons behind the alterations in the disciplinary charter.
According to Çavuşoğlu, the Council of Ministers decided to modify the Disciplinary Regulation to uphold the fundamental right to freedom of belief for every individual. The Minister addressed the ongoing debate over the headscarf issue in schools, stating that this is a topic that is deliberated every year in the country. He emphasized that the recent change in the Disciplinary Regulation was not mandated by any technical boards, and it was directly taken to the Council of Ministers for approval.
Çavuşoğlu highlighted a specific incident at Bekirpaşa High School where two students were prohibited from wearing headscarves to school before the amendment in the Disciplinary Regulation. Following the changes, these students were allowed to exercise their rights to wear headscarves to school without facing any disciplinary actions.
The Minister emphasized that the Constitution guarantees freedoms that should not be infringed upon by disciplinary measures. By granting students the freedom to wear headscarves, Çavuşoğlu reiterated the importance of respecting religious beliefs and freedoms.
Çavuşoğlu also stressed the need for political parties to bravely address and discuss issues related to religious freedoms in schools. He assured that complaints and concerns regarding religious beliefs are being conveyed to the Council of Ministers for thorough examination and decision-making.
Furthermore, the Minister expressed concerns about the negative impact of disciplinary actions on the equality of opportunity in education. He emphasized the importance of protecting the right to education for all students, regardless of their beliefs or practices.
