Minister Lázár Foresees Strong Business Growth in Southeast Hungary

The Hungarian government has announced a new priority for the development of south-east Hungary, with a focus on the town of Makó. Minister for Construction and Transport, János Lázár, highlighted the government’s commitment to turning Szeged into a strongly developing and prosperous city by investing in infrastructure and industrial areas.

One of the key projects in this development plan is the support for Chinese car manufacturer BYD’s investment near Szeged. The government is investing heavily in linking the car plant with the highway, establishing a rail connection between Budapest and Szeged, and upgrading the drinking and wastewater system to meet the demands of the plant. Additionally, efforts will be made to ensure sufficient gas and electricity capacity for the region.

The benefits of these investments will extend beyond Szeged, with the entire region set to prosper. Plans to reconstruct a rail link and build a suburban rail link between Makó and Szeged are also being considered to further facilitate connectivity.

The industrial park in Makó, currently servicing 50 companies, will undergo expansion to meet growing demand. A water system upgrade worth 3 billion forints is already in progress, and a subsidiary of Chinese company COFCO Packaging is investing 27.5 billion to build a packaging plant in the park.

Highlighting China’s significant investments in Hungary, Lázár mentioned the Budapest-Belgrade railway line as a pilot project in the EU. This project will introduce Chinese signalling and safety systems into the European railway system.

Lázár praised Makó as an important ally of the Hungarian government, noting the town’s progress in tourism, industry, and the recent upgrade of the local thermal baths. With these developments, the government aims to strengthen the position of south-east Hungary as a key economic hub in the country.
