Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu Attends UN General Assembly Meetings

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu recently attended the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly meetings in New York, where he held a bilateral meeting with Asad Majeed Khan, Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

During the meeting, Ertuğruloğlu provided an update on the situation in Cyprus, highlighting that the federation-based negotiations, which had been ongoing for 50 years, came to an end in 2017. He emphasized the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s vision of a two-state solution based on sovereign equality and equal international status, in line with the realities on the island.

Ertuğruloğlu stressed the importance of the international community recognizing the current facts to maintain stability and peace on the island. He also called upon ECO member states to support Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s call for the recognition of the TRNC’s independence and the establishment of diplomatic, political, and economic relations.

Highlighting the TRNC’s commitment to the ECO’s goals and vision since becoming an observer member, Ertuğruloğlu reaffirmed that the TRNC will continue to participate in meetings and events under the organization’s umbrella and contribute to its work.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mustafa Lakadamyalı accompanied Minister Ertuğruloğlu at the meeting, which took place at the UN headquarters. The discussions held at the meeting are expected to have implications for the future of Cyprus and the region as a whole.
