
Minister Tunç reports 351 arrests in earthquake investigations

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç has visited the city of Adıyaman to engage in various activities and meetings. Upon his arrival at the airport, he was welcomed by Adıyaman Governor Osman Varol, Adıyaman Mayor Süleyman Kılınç, AK Party deputies Resul Kurt and Mustafa Alakayış, Adıyaman University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Turgut, and members of the protocol.
During his first visit to the Adıyaman Governor’s Office, Minister Tunç attended a Disaster Coordination Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to gain information about the ongoing efforts in the city following the recent earthquake disaster. After the meeting, Minister Tunç spoke to journalists and highlighted the swift response and progress made in the affected areas. He also mentioned that forensic investigations were underway.
Minister Tunç emphasized the importance of gathering evidence in earthquake investigations. He revealed that numerous prosecutors and experts had been assigned to the region to assist in these efforts. Minister Tunç stated, “We have conducted rapid examinations of the buildings and taken core samples. While the assessment of damages and debris removal continues, criminal investigations are also ongoing. As of now, 1757 suspects have been prosecuted. Investigations against 351 individuals are still in progress, with another 642 individuals under judicial control.”
The minister also highlighted the need for expediting court procedures to address the cases of the affected citizens. In response to this, three new administrative courts have been established alongside the existing one in Adıyaman. Additionally, the number of heavy penal courts in the city has been increased from two to three.
Minister Tunç raised another important topic regarding convicts who were granted leave due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained that out of the 122,000 convicts on leave, those with sentences less than five years will not be required to return to prison. However, those who have served more than five years may need to go back, depending on their specific circumstances. Minister Tunç mentioned that a decision regarding this matter will be made at the General Assembly next week.
After the courthouse visit, Minister Tunç paid a visit to the AK Party Provincial Presidency. The purpose of this visit was not disclosed.
