After Government Meeting, Minister Gergely Gulyás Gives Update on War Situation
After a government meeting on Wednesday, Minister Gergely Gulyás, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office, and Eszter Vitályos, Government Spokesperson, held a press briefing this morning to provide an update on the situation regarding the war in Ukraine. The government assessed the war situation, including a review of the front lines and the reaction of Europe and its allies during yesterday’s cabinet meeting.
Minister Gergely Gulyás expressed concerns about the escalating difficulty of the situation in Ukraine. He mentioned that the Ukrainian army is struggling to hold the front line, leading to forced conscription throughout the country. Additionally, Ukrainian citizens, including Hungarians, are at risk of forced conscription in Transcarpathia. However, Gulyás assured that Hungary will not extradite anyone to Ukraine.
The Minister also criticized statements calling for military intervention in Ukraine, labeling them as irresponsible. He emphasized that Hungary’s interest is for NATO to make decisions regarding any potential troop deployment in Ukraine, from which Hungary can opt out completely.
In response to the ongoing proceedings before the European Court of Justice, Gulyás mentioned that Hungary could face a fine for not implementing a ruling related to the legal border closure. He highlighted the postponement of the decision until June 13, indicating the European attitude towards border protection.
Furthermore, the Minister addressed the recent assassination attempt on Robert Fico and condemned the hate speech that followed on social media. He emphasized the illegality of hate politics and encouraged tolerance and respect in political discourse.
Regarding Hungary’s upcoming EU Presidency starting in July, Gulyás outlined four priority areas: security and defense policy, improving competitiveness, reforming agricultural policy, and addressing demographic challenges. He also touched upon the Article 7 procedure, stressing that the termination of the procedure against Poland was a result of political perception rather than legal considerations.
Overall, the government remains focused on addressing the complexities of the war in Ukraine, navigating legal challenges, and preparing for its upcoming EU Presidency with the aim of promoting security, competitiveness, and demographic stability within the European Union.
