Newly Identified Invading Fish Species Poses Threat to Mediterranean Biodiversity
The Mediterranean basin is witnessing the emergence of a potentially harmful species, the striped snake catfish (Plotosus lineatus), according to a recent announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This Indo-Pacific species has made its way to local shores via the Suez Canal, raising concerns about its impact on regional biodiversity.
Recent Discoveries
The striped snake catfish was first recorded off the coast of Cyprus in 2022, particularly in the northeastern region of the island. Since then, it has continued to spread, with sightings reported in the coastal area of Zafer in Southern Cyprus as recently as September 2023. Fishermen in the Lapta region also captured this species in early April 2023.
Safety Precautions
As the population of this species grows, the Ministry has urged both the public and fishermen to exercise caution. Key safety points include:
- Behavior: The fish usually travels in schools along the seabed.
- Venomous Spines: Both the dorsal and pectoral fins possess venomous spines, which can inflict significant pain and injury upon contact.
- Handling Recommendations: While the fish is edible, caution is advised during its capture. Protective gloves and appropriate gear should be worn to avoid interactions with the venomous spines.
- First Aid: In the event of a sting, immerse the affected area in hot water (approximately 45°C) as soon as possible and seek medical attention immediately.
Monitoring and Reporting
The Ministry is committed to closely monitoring this invasive species to mitigate any potential adverse effects on the ecosystem. They encourage anyone who encounters the striped snake catfish to report sightings to the Fisheries Branch of the Livestock Department.
