Ministry of Commerce Investigates Price Gouging Following Istanbul Earthquake
In a recent statement, the Ministry of Commerce addressed alarming price hikes observed after the devastating earthquake in Istanbul. The Ministry noted an uptick in costs for essential items such as first aid bags, earthquake tents, and various emergency supplies. In response, a broad investigation has been launched into major electronic marketplaces and suppliers engaged in these practices.
The Ministry revealed that 236 enterprises have collectively raised prices on 1,079 products related to earthquake readiness. Investigative efforts are ongoing, and further analysis will determine whether administrative fines will be levied against those found guilty of unjust pricing. This scrutiny stems from violations of the first paragraph of Article 1 of Law No. 6585, aimed at safeguarding consumers from unfair market practices.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent marketplace, particularly in times of disaster. Officials reiterated that inspections would persist, targeting individuals and organizations that exploit crises for profit at the expense of vulnerable citizens.
In a related development, concerns are also rising around housing insurance in the aftermath of the earthquake, prompting questions about potential price spikes in that sector as well.
The Ministry assures the public that it will continue its efforts to protect consumer rights and ensure equitable pricing during challenging times.
