The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Reacts to Extension of Decision to Lift Arms Embargo on Greek Cypriot Administration
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a written statement in response to the recent decision by the USA to re-extend the lifting of the arms embargo against the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus. The decision, which was initially made in September 2020, has now been extended for another year starting from October 1, 2024.
In the statement, the Ministry expressed concern over the decision, stating that it would have serious repercussions for the region. Minister Fidan of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) also weighed in on the issue, warning that the decision would lead to increased militarization on the island and upset the delicate balance of power in the region.
“It will damage the sensitive balances in the region,” the Ministry stated in response to the decision. “This grave mistake will only serve to escalate armament activities on the island and undermine stability in the region. We urge the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus to reconsider their actions and work towards peaceful solutions that do not further escalate tensions in the region.”
The Ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region and called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards diplomatic solutions to the ongoing conflicts. It also expressed its readiness to engage in dialogue and negotiations to address the underlying issues and find a path towards lasting peace and stability in the region.
