4-Year-Old Halil Buğra Çağdaş Receives Life-Saving Kidney Transplant
Halil Buğra Çağdaş, a 4-year-old boy from Bodrum district in Muğla, Turkey, has successfully undergone a life-saving kidney transplant. Halil was diagnosed with atrophic kidney when he was just 2 months old. Thanks to the efforts of the medical team at Akdeniz University’s Tuncer Karpuzoğlu Organ Transplantation Institute, Halil received a cross-transplant from a compatible donor.
Halil’s father, Burhanettin Çağdaş, initially hoped to donate his own kidney to his son. However, due to an incompatibility in their blood types, Burhanettin graciously donated his kidney to another patient in need, which opened up the opportunity for Halil to undergo the cross-transplant.
The successful operation took place on August 31, 2021, at Akdeniz University Hospital. Following the procedure, Halil’s health significantly improved, bringing hope and relief to his family. Halil expressed his gratitude and aspirations, stating, “I want to be a doctor. I want to play with toys. I’m glad I received the transplant. Donating an organ saves a life. I am cured.”
Halil’s father, Burhanettin, shared his joy and described the transformation he witnessed in his son’s life. Previously, Halil struggled with basic functions such as eating, drinking, walking, and talking. However, after the transplant, Halil’s condition greatly improved, and he can now enjoy everyday activities like eating, talking, running, and playing.
The road to the transplant was not easy for the Çağdaş family. They spent several months undergoing various tests and consultations at Akdeniz University Hospital to determine if they were suitable organ donors. Ultimately, the hospital proved to be an excellent choice for their journey, providing the necessary support and expertise.
Burhanettin expressed his hopes for his son’s future, saying, “I want my child to become a doctor someday and pursue his own dreams. We are grateful for the care we received at Akdeniz University Hospital. Organ donation truly saves lives, and there is nothing more beautiful than that.”
