MIT Graduates Steal $25 Million in Cryptocurrency in Just 12 Seconds

Two brothers, Anton Peraire-Bueno, 24, and James Peraire-Bueno, 28, have been arrested on charges of wire fraud and money laundering in connection with a cryptocurrency theft. The US Department of Justice described the robbery, which occurred in April 2023, as “the first of its kind ever.”

According to Deputy prosecutor Lisa Monaco, the Peraire-Bueno brothers used advanced technology to execute their plan, which they had been working on for months, in a matter of seconds. They managed to steal $25 million worth of Ethereum in the process.

Both brothers are said to have been educated at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where they studied mathematics and computer engineering. They reportedly utilized their specialized skills acquired at MIT to bypass the verification process of Ethereum’s money transfer transactions.

Attorney General Damian Williams expressed concerns about the blockchain system’s vulnerability in light of the defendants’ scheme. Ethereum, the second most popular cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, operates on blockchain technology, which is decentralized and lacks a central governing authority.

The arrested brothers are accused of unlawfully accessing pending private transfer transactions to swindle Ethereum investors out of their cryptocurrencies. Investigators have dubbed the crime “the Exploit,” highlighting both its exploitative nature and the perpetrators’ perceived superiority in executing the theft. This incident raises questions about the security and integrity of blockchain systems in the digital currency space.
