Rising Temperatures Break Records Across the Globe
As summer grips the northern hemisphere, temperatures continue to soar to unprecedented levels, with daily records being shattered in many regions. On Sunday, July 21, the average temperature was recorded at 17.09 degrees Celsius, surpassing last year’s record high by a narrow margin.
Climate scientists, like Joyce Kimutai from Imperial College London, are warning that this trend of rising temperatures is a direct result of the burning of fossil fuels. If we do not take immediate action to reduce emissions and achieve net zero emissions, temperatures will continue to climb.
The Copernicus program, which monitors global air and sea temperatures in real time using satellite data, has noted that this year has seen a series of extreme weather events caused by global warming. Heatwaves and wildfires have ravaged parts of Asia, North America, and Europe, while the Arctic is experiencing unprecedented fires and rapid warming.
What is particularly concerning to scientists is the consistent breaking of temperature records every month. Since June 2023, each month has set a new record compared to previous years, with the trend showing no signs of slowing down. The 16.8-degree record, set in August 2016, has been broken 57 times since July 2023.
Experts are warning that we are in the midst of potentially the hottest period on Earth in 100,000 years, fueled by the continuous emission of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Despite efforts to curb rising temperatures, the burning of fossil fuels remains the main driver of climate change.
As temperatures continue to rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, it is crucial that we take urgent action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and safeguard our planet for future generations.
