Mongolian Youth Experience Surge in Digital Literacy

Mongolia, a country heavily reliant on mining for its economy, is looking to e-commerce to diversify and overcome geographical challenges. Tapan Mishra, the UN Resident Coordinator in Mongolia, highlights the importance of being eTrade ready to leverage its trade potential. UNCTAD has worked closely with the government to provide a series of policy recommendations to support Mongolia’s digital transformation and move away from a commodity-based economy. Mongolia has made significant progress in ICT infrastructure and improving internet connectivity, with mobile broadband subscriptions rising from 80 to 116 per 100 people between 2017 and 2021, and over 70% of subscribers having access to 4G/LTE networks. The country has also witnessed a significant increase in online shopping among Mongolians aged 15 years or older, growing from 7 to 42% between 2017 and 2021. The assessment also highlights that domestic digital payments are now widely used for domestic purchases. With all these developments, Mongolia aims to accelerate its digital transformation, diversify its economy, and further enhance its e-commerce ecosystem.
