Mosquito Expert Issues Warning of Invasion

With the approach of warmer weather, Hungary may face an invasion of mosquitoes, according to insect expert Tamás Sáringer-Kenyeres. In the past six months, Hungary has experienced significant precipitation, causing the soil to become saturated in many areas, creating ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

The current spring weather also provides suitable conditions for the bloodsuckers, but the new mosquitoes are not yet a threat as they will die due to cooler temperatures. However, a major invasion can be expected when warmer weather causes the classic larval breeding sites to warm up, leading to eggs hatching and larvae maturing.

In regions like Zala and Vas in Western Hungary, as well as in several parts of the lowlands, large inland water areas have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes due to the inability of rainfall to drain away. As a result, mosquito populations are expected to rise in these areas.

According to the expert, while it may not be necessary to start mosquito eradication in February, preparations to control the mosquito population should be made in March. Biological control may need to be initiated in early spring, with chemical control becoming necessary in the high season of May and June.

Tamás Sáringer-Kenyeres emphasized that it is not the actual rainfall, but the seasonal rainfall that plays a crucial role in determining mosquito population growth.

To combat the potential invasion of mosquitoes, it is essential for authorities and the public to be prepared and take necessary measures to control the mosquito population before it becomes a significant problem.
