Mother finds justice for daughter’s death
Hülya Alkan’s ex-husband has been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for her murder by the Manisa 3rd High Criminal Court in Turkey. The court did not give good behavior reduction or unjust provocation reduction to the ex-husband. Hülya’s mother, father, and family lawyer Yalçın Arcak were happy about the legal victory. Arcak said that the decision was significant because separate sentences were given for willful killing and committing a crime against a woman, a separate penalty that is seldom given in many cases. Hülya’s mother expressed her relief that justice has been served, and her children will grow up in peace. The case was followed by many NGOs, CHP women’s branches, and the “We Will Stop Their Murders Platform.” The court’s decision indicates that violence and killings against women will not be tolerated, despite the abolishment of the Istanbul Convention.
