MPs Continue Push for Energy Drink Regulations

Romania and Hungary Propose Restrictions on Energy Drink Sales to Minors

Romania recently implemented a new legal restriction on the sale of energy drinks to individuals under the age of 18. This move has sparked a similar initiative in Hungary, albeit with less recent visibility.

Members of Parliament István Hollik from Fidesz and Lőrinc Nacsa from KDNP, who initially proposed the restriction in Hungary, reiterated their stance in a recent interview with the news portal 24.hu. They emphasized the necessity of regulating the sale and distribution of energy drinks, citing consultations with governmental, medical, and family protection organizations.

The Young Families’ Club presented a survey to the MPs, revealing that 98% of parents support stricter regulations to prevent minors from consuming commercial energy drinks. This highlights public concern over the potential harm these beverages may pose to children.

In Romania, energy drinks are defined as beverages containing stimulating substances like caffeine, taurine, and guarana, along with carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. However, the Hungarian Energy Drinks Association defines them based on energy and caffeine content, raising questions about the adequacy of regulations in Hungary.

Moreover, there is speculation about where energy drinks will be marketed if stricter regulations are imposed in Hungary. One possibility is limiting distribution to National Tobacco Stores, where only adults are legally allowed to make purchases. This could significantly restrict access for minors.

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how Hungary will address the issue of energy drink sales to minors in light of Romania’s recent legislative action.
