Hungarian Parliament’s Committee on National Cohesion Visits Hungarian Community in Romania
The Hungarian Parliament’s Committee on National Cohesion recently visited the Hungarian community in Bihor County, Romania, near the Hungarian-Romanian border. Led by Károly Pánczél, the president of the committee, the members traveled to Oradea to learn about the situation and challenges faced by the Hungarian minority in the region.
The visit to Bihor County is part of the committee’s practice of visiting cross-border communities during each legislative cycle. This time, the members held an extensive consultation in Oradea, breaking down borders between nations and emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong relationships between communities.
During the meeting, local representatives shared positive news and expressed gratitude for Hungary’s support. However, Pánczél highlighted that the Hungarian government’s support for the minority community is a duty rather than a favor. Discussions also touched on the ongoing challenges faced by the Hungarian minority in the region.
The committee also met with Traján Kreszta, the spokesperson for the Romanian minority in Hungary, who praised the improved education system for Romanian minorities in Hungary. Kreszta emphasized the importance of education in integrating minorities into the local community and preserving traditions.
Additionally, Ödön Szabó, the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) parliamentary representative, made specific requests to the committee for support in planning documentation for projects in the region. Szabó highlighted the need for experiences for youth, such as camps, and expressed the desire to revive cultural festivals in the area.
