Muslim Council Establishes Kazakhstan Branch, Praises Dialogue Efforts
Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, has become the home of the Central Asian branch of the Muslim Council of Elders, an independent international organization aimed at promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation among Muslim and non-Muslim societies. The branch was inaugurated on October 11th at the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana.
Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, the Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, expressed his belief that the establishment of the branch in Astana will contribute to religious diplomacy and serve as a catalyst for peace and cooperation. He emphasized that the branch will play a significant role in promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding in the region.
Abdelsalam also highlighted the opportunities for collaboration between the Muslim Council of Elders and Kazakhstan. He suggested that the council and Kazakhstan can work together to launch initiatives that enhance the positive role of youth in their communities and reinforce values of dialogue, tolerance, coexistence, and peace.
The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, is comprised of senior Muslim scholars and leaders from around the world. It aims to propagate values such as peace, mutual coexistence, and complete citizenship.
One of the council’s notable achievements is the signing of the Abu Dhabi Document on Human Fraternity, which was signed by Ahmed Al-Tayeb and Pope Francis. This document has inspired various initiatives, including the Abrahamic Family House and the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity.
In line with its belief in the role of religious leaders in facing global challenges, the Muslim Council of Elders is set to host a global summit for religious leaders in Abu Dhabi in November, focusing on the issue of climate change. Additionally, the council is launching the Faith Pavilion at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) to facilitate dialogue among adherents of different religions and cultures and address climate change-related risks.
Abdelsalam acknowledged the shared commitment between the Muslim Council of Elders and the Congress of World and Traditional Religions in promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation through interfaith dialogue. He commended Kazakhstan for its efforts and role in supporting inter-religious dialogue and its initiatives to promote peace and tolerance.
The establishment of the Central Asian branch of the Muslim Council of Elders in Astana marks an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations, building a bridge between religions and cultures, and fostering cooperation in the region. Kazakhstan’s unwavering support and commitment to international dialogue, tolerance, and coexistence have been crucial in realizing this milestone.
