Bullets Fired into the Air During Holiday Celebrations Cause Disaster in Sakarya
In the Serdivan district of Sakarya, the tradition of firing bullets into the air as a form of holiday entertainment has resulted in a tragic incident. Despite annual warnings from authorities, firefighters across the city have disregarded the safety of citizens. One such incident occurred on 344th Street in the Istiklal District of Serdivan.
Murat Tokluca had gone out to his garden to have breakfast with neighbors and relatives. While enjoying their meal, Tokluca and his friend Cevdet Topaloğlu became victims of a stray bullet of unknown origin. Tokluca was hit in the stomach, while Topaloğlu’s arm was grazed by the bullet. Fortunately, no children in the garden were harmed during this incident, which could have turned into a disaster. Tokluca and Topaloğlu discussed the incident that had befallen them.
Tokluca, with the bullet still lodged in his stomach, expressed his disbelief, saying, “It’s astonishing how fragile human life can be. We were simply having breakfast in the presence of children when the bullet struck. We had planned this breakfast with our friends to enjoy Eid al-Adha, and as we were preparing to have a good time, this bullet came out of nowhere and hit my stomach. The real concern here is not that I was hit, but rather the fact that we had children aged two, four, and six with us. Any of them could have been struck in the head or body. We shouldn’t have to experience such an event because of the reckless behavior of others. The police have initiated an investigation, but what can they do when shots are fired into the air from all directions? We could have lost our lives here, or if it had happened to one of our children, who would be held accountable? Holidays have become trivialized, reduced to self-satisfaction. We went to the hospital to get checked, luckily nothing serious happened. Those who engage in such irresponsible behavior need to have some conscience. Their own children, grandchildren, or relatives could easily find themselves in this situation. Will they find it enjoyable then when something happens to them?”
Topaloğlu, who witnessed the incident, shared his shock, stating, “We decided to have breakfast in our garden with family and neighbors on the morning of the holiday. During the meal, a bullet struck my brother Murat in the stomach, who was sitting next to me. Then it hit my elbow and landed in the chair I was sitting on. We couldn’t comprehend what had just occurred. Upon investigation, we discovered the small bullet. We immediately contacted the police for legal action. There were children present during the incident; they could have been hit as well. This incident could have happened to anyone and led to a much bigger problem. It tainted our holiday. What is the purpose of firing guns into the air on the morning of Eid? Those responsible also have families, children, and relatives. Similar incidents could happen to them. We are currently in a state of shock. The police have taken appropriate measures and are conducting a thorough investigation. We await the results.”
