NASA’s Parker Space Probe Successfully Completes Closest Flight to the Sun Ever
NASA’s Parker vehicle, also known as the “Sun Explorer”, has made history by completing the closest flight to the star ever recorded. Approaching a distance of 6.1 million kilometers to the surface of the Sun, the Parker probe has successfully achieved this unprecedented milestone.
According to a statement on NASA’s website, the Parker vehicle transmitted a signal for the first time on the evening of December 26 after starting its approach towards the Sun’s orbit. The operation teams at NASA confirmed that the mission to “touch the Sun” had survived the flight at a record proximity to the surface of the Sun on December 24.
The Parker probe set a new speed record by moving at a speed of 700 thousand kilometers per hour through the Sun’s atmosphere. NASA’s main goal for this mission is to gain a better understanding of the star’s magnetic field, plasma dynamics, and their impact on the Solar System by studying the Sun’s atmosphere and the source of solar winds with the Parker space rover.
In addition to flying across the Sun’s corona, the Parker rover will conduct measurements to help scientists understand why this region has become so hot and to discover how energetic particles reach speeds of half the speed of light.
Launched in August 2018, the Parker probe achieved the title of the fastest man-made object by reaching speeds of more than 635 thousand kilometers per hour during its 17th close orbit on September 27, 2023, when it approached 7.26 million kilometers from the Sun.
