National Air Guard Revealed as Source of US Confidential Document Leak
US authorities have arrested 21-year-old Jack Teixeira for allegedly leaking confidential documents that contained “sensitive and highly classified materials” on various current issues, including the Ukraine-Russia War. The documents belonged to the US Department of Defense and were leaked on social media platforms Discord and Telegram. The leaked documents included secret information regarding Russia-based mercenary company Wagner’s operations in Africa, Israel’s ways of providing weapons aid to Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates’ ties with Russia.
According to officials, the leaked documents appeared to have been seized and leaked by someone who had access to the US intelligence system. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking into potential criminals within the Ministry of Defense. Some contents of the documents were not even shared with the closest US intelligence partners, raising suspicions about the involvement of US officials.
Although the leaked documents about the war in Ukraine appeared to be real, some of them had been altered, according to authorities. One of the leaked documents showed that between 16,000 and 17,500 Russian soldiers were killed in action, but US defense officials publicly announced that Russia had lost more than 200,000 casualties.
US President Joe Biden has stated that the authorities are “closer” to identifying the person behind the leak of sensitive information. A comprehensive investigation is underway, and Biden has expressed concern about the incident. However, he has also stated that he does not believe that the leak has any current impact.
