National Parachute Team Aims for Second World Championship Title
The 46th CISM World Military Parachuting Championship has officially begun in Szolnok, Hungary. The competition, which started on the first Wednesday of July, sees nations from around the world, including Hungary, competing in three different events. After achieving medals in the past decade, the Hungarian national parachute team is aiming for its second gold medal in the history of Hungarian parachuting, with the support of the home crowd.
The competition is taking place at the Szolnok-Szandaszőlős Sport Airfield, where teams are facing challenges due to the cloudy and windy weather. Precise jumps require calm conditions and clear skies for assessing the movements during the form and style jumps.
In the championship, participants are required to land in the middle of a defined target area from a height of 1,100 meters in ten jumps. Scoring is based on accuracy, with penalties for each centimeter off the mark. The team with the lowest number of penalty points wins. Ensign Tamás Varga, a veteran competitor who has represented Hungary in seven World Championships, emphasized the team’s strength in achieving precise landings.
The style event involves performing specific figures, including full turns and backflips, within a set time frame. Judges evaluate the accuracy of the moves, deducting points for any deviations from the required angles.
The most dynamic event in the championship is the formation skydiving, where teams of four jump from 3,200 meters and perform synchronized turns within a time limit. Footage from a camera escort is used by the jury to assess the figures presented.
Colonel Tamás Bali, the Vice-Chairman of the organizing committee and Commander of the Kiss József 86th Helicopter Brigade, encourages the audience to show their support for the Hungarian team. The championship runs until July 13, 2024, giving the Hungarian parachute team a chance to shine on their home turf.
