National Unity Bridge Breaks Guinness World Record

The town of Sátoraljaújhely in northeastern Hungary, along the Slovak border, has recently made history by being awarded a Guinness World Record certificate for the Bridge of National Unity. This suspension bridge has been recognized as the longest span pedestrian suspension bridge in the world, spanning an impressive 723 meters.

During a ceremony held in Sátoraljaújhely, Péter Szamosvölgyi, the mayor of the town, expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to making this bridge a reality and achieving such a prestigious title. The Bridge of National Unity has already welcomed over 300,000 visitors since its inauguration on the Day of National Unity, June 4, 2024.

Anouk de Timary, the official judge of Guinness World Records, commended the achievement and emphasized the importance of this unique architectural solution. With a span of 84 meters above the Májuskút Valley and featuring an eight-meter-long glass panel in the middle, the bridge connects key landmarks including the Hungarian Calvary, St Stephen’s Chapel, the 100th National Flag, the Turul bird statue, and the Tourism and Sports Center.

The bridge’s impressive specifications include six cables with a diameter of 70 millimeters, weighing over 245 tons. The walkway is 1.2 meters wide, allowing up to 300 people to cross at once, even in winds of up to 10 m/s. The record-breaking Bridge of National Unity stands as a symbol of unity and pride for the town of Sátoraljaújhely and for Hungary as a whole.
