Nationalism and Patriotism: Understanding the Difference
Turkish political leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu spoke at a rally in Erzincan Cumhuriyet Square, promising to be “everyone’s president” and pledging not to use harsh language in politics. He stated that he would not discriminate against people based on their voting preferences, identities, beliefs, or lifestyles, and promised to rebuild factories in every corner of Anatolia. He also criticized the privatization of the Erzincan Sugar Factory that resulted in only 250 employees, compared to the previous 6,000. Kılıçdaroğlu emphasized the importance of politics serving citizens and promised that those whose houses were destroyed in earthquakes would receive free housing. He stated that his understanding of nationalism is patriotism and that his administration’s nationalism would never be a subject of discussion. Kılıçdaroğlu introduced MP candidates Mustafa Sarıgül and Ufuk Aktaş to the audience after his speech.
