Nationalists Accuse Hungarians for Presidential Election Cancellation

AUR Candidate for Prime Minister Attacks Orbán and Kelemen in Strongly Worded Op-Ed
In a strongly worded opinion piece, Petrișor Peiu, the candidate for prime minister from AUR, has launched scathing attacks against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and RMDSZ leader Hunor Kelemen. According to a political analyst interviewed by maszol.ro, the message is also targeted at certain groups within the governing parties PNL and PSD, who were trying to shift responsibility for an election scandal onto RMDSZ and collaborate with the ultranationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).
Peiu labeled Hunor Kelemen, the leader of RMDSZ, as the “informal” leader of the ruling coalition, who shamelessly admitted to being behind the cancellation of last year’s presidential elections. In an article published on the gandul.ro website, the AUR senator referenced an earlier interview where Kelemen stated that Romania should not be ashamed of the Constitutional Court’s decision to annul the elections.
The AUR politician referred to Viktor Orbán as “the great enemy of Romania” who is intertwined with Kelemen. Peiu warned that the election issue is becoming a dangerous game controlled from the outside. He expressed concerns that the cooperation between Orbán and Putin could be part of a game orchestrated by Moscow to destabilize Romania’s young and immature democracy. Peiu also highlighted that the coalition seemed to relish Orbán’s friendship.
Political analyst T. János Barabás, contacted by maszol.ro, remarked on Peiu’s coded message, emphasizing that those aiming for a political career in Bucharest often exhibit anti-Hungarian sentiments, especially within the extremist AUR. Barabás criticized the Sovreigntist Camp for promoting soft fascism and advocating for an ethnocratic state at the expense of minorities.
Barabás interpreted Peiu’s message as a strategic move to deflect blame onto RMDSZ for the election scandal and encourage collaboration with the far-right. He noted that Romanians, like other regional populations, tend to see secret conspiracies where none exist, especially given historical experiences of major powers making decisions above their heads.
It seems that the AUR leadership is displeased with Kelemen’s recent statements, where he expressed willingness to facilitate a meeting between Romanian government officials and representatives of the Trump administration through his connection with Orbán. Despite this, tensions and political maneuverings continue to ripple across the Romanian political landscape.
