Natural Wonder: The Largest Artificial Lake in the Country
Lake Tisza in eastern Hungary has transformed from a water management facility to a popular tourist destination. According to Hungarian Nation, the lake has become a fantastic ornithological and natural paradise, earning it the nickname of a man-made paradise. State Secretary for Active Hungary, Máriusz Révész, noted that the lake’s development has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
One of the most significant developments is the creation of a 65-kilometer cycle path surrounding the lake, which attracts nearly 150,000 cyclists annually. Additionally, Lake Tisza offers not only nature walks but also water sports, making it Hungary’s largest artificial lake. The lookout points, which can only be accessed by water, have become so popular that kayaks and canoes often crowd the area, making it difficult to moor.
Máriusz Révész emphasized the importance of tourism in Lake Tisza for local families, as the influx of tourists creates job opportunities and services for the community. The lake provides livelihoods for many locals who offer various services to tourists.
Lake Tisza, also known as Kisköre Reservoir, is the largest artificial lake in Hungary. It was created as part of the Tisza River flood control project, with the Tisza Dam being built in 1973. The reservoir’s completion in the 1990s led to its popularity as a holiday destination, offering an alternative to the crowded and expensive Lake Balaton. The lake is part of the Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. It showcases a diverse ecology of birds, plants, and animals. The Lake Tisza Ecocenter in Poroszló provides an opportunity to explore and learn about the nature and wildlife of the Tisza River valley and Lake Tisza.
Tourism in Lake Tisza continues to thrive, attracting visitors from both Hungary and abroad. With its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, the lake offers a unique experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
