Nauryz: Celebrating Unity, Renewal, and Peace in Kazakhstan
As March 22 approaches, homes and public squares across Kazakhstan are bustling with preparations for the Nauryz holiday. This ancient celebration, marked by grand concerts, traditional feasts, music, and games, holds a special place in the hearts of the Kazakh people. Beyond the festivities, Nauryz is a holiday that symbolizes humanity’s pursuit of unity, renewal, and peace.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted the importance of unity and peace in Kazakhstan, emphasizing how people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds come together to celebrate Nauryz. The word “Nauryz” itself means ‘new day’ in Persian, signifying the arrival of spring and the balance between day and night on the vernal equinox.
In recent years, Kazakhstan has extended the celebration of Nauryz to ten days, known as Nauryznama. This new format introduces a range of activities and events that focus on different values and themes associated with the holiday, from charity initiatives to environmental campaigns.
For many Kazakhs, Nauryz is a time to reunite with family and friends, clean their homes, exchange warm wishes, and practice forgiveness. Traditional greetings like “Nauryz meiramy kutty bolsyn!” and “Ak mol bolsyn!” are exchanged, reflecting a spirit of abundance and good wishes.
One educator from Astana, Bolat Nassygazy, shared his fond memories of celebrating Nauryz since childhood. He described the festive atmosphere on the city’s main square, where traditional dancing, music, and delicious dishes like kozhe and bauyrsaks are enjoyed by all.
Nassygazy also highlighted the importance of organizing Nauryz celebrations in schools, where students can learn about Kazakh traditions, try hands-on activities, and appreciate the cultural significance of the holiday. These events promote intercultural understanding and community spirit among students of different nationalities.
Education researcher Aizat Arystanbek emphasized the connection between Nauryz traditions and the principles of positive peace. She highlighted how Kazakh cultural practices, such as hospitality (qonaqasy), collective assistance (asar), and giving blessings (bata beru), promote openness, empathy, collaboration, and inner peace.
Lynne Parmenter, a professor at Nazarbayev University, shared her experience of celebrating Nauryz in Kazakhstan and reflected on the values of togetherness and new beginnings that are central to the holiday. She noted similarities between Nauryz and celebrations in Japan and the United Kingdom, highlighting the universal themes of connection, hope, and peace that are shared across cultures.
As Kazakhstan gears up for another joyous Nauryz celebration, the spirit of unity, renewal, and peace continues to inspire people to come together, celebrate traditions, and embrace the values that resonate globally.
