Netflix Representatives Face Harsh Criticism in Parliament: Yayman Urges Against Allowing Lafa to Take a Tourist Tour

The Digital Media Commission recently met with representatives from a company to discuss complaints and allegations concerning Netflix. Commission Chairman Hüseyin Yayman delivered a powerful speech highlighting the issue of virtual betting and gambling. Yayman strongly stated that the era of digital copyright law has come to an end, declaring, “Labor theft is now over.”
In his address, Yayman went on to describe the virtual betting problem as a national security issue, leading to family breakdowns and even suicides. He underlined the negative consequences of easy money-making through virtual betting and emphasized the urgent need to address this issue. Yayman stressed the importance of updating the government’s approach to tackle the economic risks associated with the rapidly growing virtual betting market.
Yayman pointed out the need to implement regulations and frameworks similar to those in Germany, France, and England to prevent gambling addiction. He stressed that young people under 18 must be protected from the dangers of gambling and betting on virtual platforms. Yayman also emphasized that the virtual betting issue should not be influenced by political party competition, but rather addressed as a non-partisan problem.
Moreover, MHP Deputy Levent Uysal highlighted the importance of defending Turkey’s red lines, particularly in the face of external pressures. The Commission also discussed concerns related to Netflix, addressing issues such as the Famagusta series and LGBT content. Yayman urged Netflix representatives to provide clear answers regarding their stance on gender neutralization and LGBT issues.
Netflix’s Public Policies Officer, Mavili, assured that there is no lobbying pressure on the company globally or locally. Mavili emphasized Netflix’s goal of offering diverse and engaging content for viewers, without any external influences on their content production.
Overall, the meeting between the Digital Media Commission and company representatives shed light on pressing issues related to virtual betting, gambling, and content regulation in the digital media landscape. The Commission’s efforts to address these challenges reflect a commitment to safeguarding public interests and promoting responsible digital practices.
