Nevruz Celebration at Yenikapı: A Report from the Istanbul Governorship
The Governor’s Office in Istanbul has recently released a statement regarding the celebration of Nevruz at the Yenikapi Activity Area. According to the statement, an application was made to the Governor’s Office by the Regulation Committee on March 5, requesting permission for the event.
After careful evaluation and consideration of relevant legislation, it was decided that the event could proceed with certain conditions. These conditions included the establishment of a stand-bar in the activity area and the surrounding area, as well as the exhibition of magazines and publications, provided that no illegal content was distributed.
However, during the event on March 23, concerns were raised about the presence of slogans inciting criminal behavior and banners carrying illegal messages. Despite warnings from the regulatory committee, these issues were not addressed appropriately. As a result, the Governor’s Office stressed the importance of complying with the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911 and stated that efforts would continue to identify and prevent illegal activities at public events.
Overall, the Governor’s Office remains committed to ensuring the safety and legality of public gatherings in Istanbul, and will take necessary actions to uphold the law and protect public order.
