Nevzat Bahtiyar Acquitted of Murder: Latest Update in the Narin Case

Nevzat Bahtiyar’s lawyers, Adnan Ataş and Ali Eryılmaz, have formally requested the release of their client in a petition submitted to the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court. The trial is set to be transferred to the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court for further review.

In the petition, Lawyer Ataş argued that the evidence in the case has already been collected and there are no concrete reasons to suspect Bahtiyar of attempting to flee. Additionally, he mentioned that the crime in question is not classified as a serious offense, and the current arrest measure is akin to punishment rather than preventative. With all necessary precautions taken to ensure personal security, the lawyers believe that Bahtiyar should be released under judicial control measures outlined in Article 109 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

On December 28, 2024, during a decision hearing at the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court, Bahtiyar was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for “destroying, concealing or altering criminal evidence” in connection to the case involving the intentional murder of Narin Güran. The other defendants involved in the case were given aggravated life sentences for their roles in the crime.

The case stems from the disappearance of Narin Güran on August 21 in Diyarbakır, whose lifeless body was later found in a creek. Following an investigation, Bahtiyar, along with family members of the victim, were arrested and charged with the murder. The trial began on November 7 and has seen multiple hearings leading up to the recent sentencing.

The defense team is now awaiting a decision on the request for Bahtiyar’s release, citing the lack of substantial evidence and the client’s cooperation with authorities throughout the legal proceedings.
