New Agriculture Plan Revealed
Hungary Embarks on Largest Agricultural Development Program Since 1989
Sándor Farkas, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, announced at the Portfolio Agriculture 2025 conference in Kecskemét that Hungary is participating in the largest agricultural and food industry development program since the end of communism in 1989.
Farkas highlighted the historic scale of the changes happening in the agriculture sector, emphasizing that it will shape the lives of many for a long time to come. The Ministry of Agriculture aims to support and facilitate a modernization and development breakthrough for those working in the sector.
According to Farkas, agriculture and rural development are not just the internal affairs of farmers but are crucial for Hungary’s self-sufficiency, the vitality of the countryside, the preservation of traditions, community formation, and significant employment opportunities. The government sees agriculture as a national strategic sector and is dedicated to supporting its growth and development.
In the second half of 2024, during Hungary’s presidency of the European Union, the country proposed an agricultural strategy focusing on ensuring fair livelihoods for farmers, achieving full food self-sufficiency, and balancing environmental and competitiveness aspects.
Hungary plans to continue supporting area-based subsidies in the future, with significant investments directed towards agricultural development. Last year alone, nearly 585 billion forints (1.46 billion euros) were allocated to farmers, rural businesses, and local governments for rural development subsidies.
Farkas also highlighted the impressive growth of Hungarian agriculture in productivity indicators compared to other EU countries. The share of processed products in agricultural exports has increased, showcasing the sector’s evolution and progress.
The State Secretary emphasized that the government is currently processing payments for unified area- and animal-based subsidies for 2024, with significant budget allocations for various support initiatives. The focus is on supporting irrigation projects, water management, and modernizing infrastructure to promote water-saving farming practices.
Overall, Hungary’s commitment to agricultural development and modernization is evident in the significant investments and support initiatives aimed at ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for the sector.
