New Battery Technology Developed at the University of Debrecen

Researchers at the University of Debrecen have developed an environmentally friendly, high-performance prototype of a rechargeable zinc-air battery. This new type of energy storage utilizes cellulose-based, biodegradable materials as additives and membranes, marking a significant step in the university’s quest for sustainable energy solutions.

The Department of Applied Chemistry at the university has been actively exploring renewable energy and its storage possibilities. Given the limited capacity and recycling challenges associated with lithium batteries, the development of the zinc-air battery represents a promising alternative for the future.

Associate professor Tibor Nagy explained that the prototype uses a zinc anode and extracts oxygen from the air in the cathode process, making it a special kind of zinc-air battery. Notably, the system has a high theoretical capacity, positioning it as a viable alternative to lithium-based batteries.

Furthermore, the prototype operates at a lower working voltage range compared to conventional zinc-air systems, resulting in more stable operation and a longer lifespan. The absence of catalysts and heavy metals in the prototype underscores its environmentally friendly design.

The innovative energy storage system has completed its prototype phase and is now undergoing scaling-up efforts to further enhance its performance while maintaining its positive attributes. The results of the research have been published in the Journal of Energy Storage, with Nagy being recognized with the Publication Prize of the Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen.

Overall, the development of this rechargeable zinc-air battery represents a significant advancement in sustainable energy storage and aligns with the university’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
