New Developments at Szeged University and in the City of Szeged

Government funding of HUF 9.5 billion has been invested in road and infrastructure projects at the University of Szeged’s Science Park, which covers 85 hectares. The inauguration of these projects took place on Friday, supporting expanded cooperation in innovation and fostering connections between global corporate sector leaders and local research centers. The park is home to the ELI ALPS laser research institute and a plant of German defense industry company Rheinmetall. Construction of the infrastructure took approximately 18 months to complete, with Colas and Delut acting as the general contractors for the project.

A project at the ELI ALPS laser research center in Szeged, aimed at finding a solution for better managing radioactive waste, concluded on Friday. Launched in the summer of 2019, the project explored the transmutation of elements of radioactive waste as a possibility for improved management of spent fuel from nuclear power plants. Energy Minister Csaba Lantos highlighted that the research could contribute to making nuclear energy more sustainable.

The advancements in infrastructure and research in Szeged are expected to have a positive impact on the region and contribute to the progress of technology and innovation. The collaboration between the university, research institutes, and government funding showcases a commitment to developing solutions for pressing challenges in various sectors.
