New Energy Storage Facility Boosts Renewable Energy Utilization

New Energy Storage Facility Inaugurated in Hungary

An 8 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage facility with a nominal capacity of 16 megawatt hours (MWh) was unveiled on Friday at the Győr Industrial Park in northwestern Hungary. This facility is set to provide almost one fifth of Hungary’s total capacity and will significantly contribute to the utilization of renewable energy sources.

Gergely Suppan, Deputy State Secretary for Macroeconomic Analysis of the Ministry for National Economy, highlighted that the new facility will increase the total capacity of energy storage facilities in Hungary by 20 percent. ALTEO Energy Services Plc, the company behind the project, currently provides around 40 percent of these facilities.

The importance of energy demand for industrial production on European competitiveness was also emphasized during the inauguration ceremony. Several European documents, including the Draghi report, emphasized the need for affordable, reliable, locally produced, and green energy to maintain European competitiveness.

The changing global economy due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Ukraine war calls for new responses and economic policies. It has become evident that Hungary needs to establish an affordable and secure energy supply while promoting the use of green energy.

Attila Chikán Jr., President and CEO of ALTEO, noted that the new energy storage facility will enhance the company’s capacity and flexibility, enabling it to contribute towards increasing the stability of the national electricity grid and efficiently integrating weather-dependent electricity generation capacity.

The Győr facility marks ALTEO’s third energy storage facility, following those in Zugló (Budapest) and Kazincbarcika (northern Hungary). The company’s continuous efforts align with Hungary’s goal to become one of the world’s leaders in green energy storage capacity.

As Hungary navigates through the evolving energy landscape, investments in energy storage facilities play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable and resilient energy future for the country.
