New Exam to Replace KPSS: AGS Implementation Update
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin recently met with journalists at Sabancı Teachers’ House to discuss the developments in 2024 and the upcoming projects planned for 2025. During the meeting, Tekin touched upon various important topics related to education in Turkey.
One of the key points highlighted by Tekin was the regulation of private schools’ tuition fees. He mentioned that some private schools have been compensating for the lack of tuition fee increases by charging exorbitant prices for items like books and food. Tekin emphasized the need for a regulation in this area, which is expected to come into effect at the beginning of the new year.
In terms of student evaluations, Tekin stated that the Ministry will not publish students’ performance on social media platforms, as it could offend or disturb parents and students. He also mentioned that efforts are being made to address digital addiction, with a focus on imposing age restrictions similar to those in Australia and the UK.
Regarding new year celebrations, Tekin clarified that the Ministry has not introduced any new restrictions on activities that could burden families financially. He emphasized that graduation ceremonies and proms can still be held in school halls without any additional expenses.
In terms of educational assessments, Tekin announced that primary schools will switch to a development report application instead of traditional report cards. He also mentioned plans to introduce a domestic intelligence test for Science and Art Centers (BİLSEM) to assess students’ cognitive abilities.
Additionally, Tekin revealed that there will be no KPSS for teacher candidates in 2025. Instead, an exam called the Academy Entrance Examination (AGS) will be held on July 13, with results determining appointments and entrance into the National Education Academy.
Overall, Minister Tekin’s meeting with journalists shed light on the Ministry’s efforts to improve education in Turkey and ensure fair and effective evaluation practices for students and teachers alike.
