New Guest Night Figures in Hungary Disappoint Accommodation Providers

Decline in Guest Nights at Hungarian Accommodations in March

According to recent data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH), the number of guest nights at commercial and private tourism accommodations in Hungary decreased by 5.9% to 2,665,000 in March compared to the same month last year. This decline is primarily attributed to seasonal effects, particularly the absence of long weekends, which were prevalent in the previous year due to Easter and the March 15 national holiday.

Domestic travelers accounted for a 13.1% drop in guest nights, totaling 1,164,000. In contrast, international visitors showed a slight increase of 0.7%, with 1,502,000 guest nights recorded.

Despite the decline in guest nights, revenues for commercial accommodations, which include hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, campsites, resorts, and hostels, rose by 6.2%, reaching HUF 69.1 billion. A total of 20,797 tourism accommodations welcomed guests in March, among which 18,618 were private and other types of accommodations.

For the first quarter of the year, from January to March, the aggregate number of guest nights rose by 1.1% to 7,252,000 compared to the same period a year ago. Domestic traveler nights fell by 5.6% to 3,170,000, whereas foreign visitor stays increased by 6.9% to 4,083,000.

The National Economy Ministry commented on the recent data, attributing part of the tourism downturn to unseasonably cold and rainy weather in March. Notably, HUF 36.2 billion of the commercial accommodations revenue for March was generated from destinations outside of the capital.

As the tourism landscape continues to evolve, industry stakeholders will be watching closely for signs of recovery and potential shifts in traveler behavior.
