New Hungarian VR Space Cabin Revealed
Hungary has reached a significant milestone in space exploration with the unveiling of the first fully Hungarian-developed simulation space cabin equipped with VR technology. The SpaceBuzz-HU, presented in Budapest on Thursday, will be used for virtual space travel and made available free of charge to Hungarian schools as part of an educational program focused on the fragility of our planet.
Orsolya Ferencz, Ministerial Commissioner for Space Research, expressed the importance of bringing students closer to Earth and the International Space Station through experiential learning. The SpaceBuzz educational program aims to raise awareness among children about nature, environmental protection, and a range of STEM subjects. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has provided funding of HUF 9 million (EUR 23,000) to support this initiative.
Hungary’s commitment to space exploration is further demonstrated by its increased financial contributions to European Space Agency (ESA) programs. Currently, there are 168 registered Hungarian companies, research institutes, and universities involved in ESA projects. The country’s efforts have positioned its space sector at the forefront of global rankings.
As part of the HUNOR Hungarian Astronaut Program, a Hungarian research astronaut will soon journey to the International Space Station. Tibor Kapu, the selected reserve astronaut, will undergo training in the United States. Both Kapu and his reserve, Gyula Cserényi, have already experienced the VR space cabin and praised its capabilities.
Looking ahead, SpaceBuzz Hungary Public Foundation plans to build a Hungarian-developed rocket by the first half of 2025. This rocket will accommodate up to twelve participants for VR space travel, offering a unique and immersive experience. The organization’s focus on education aligns with Hungary’s space strategy, emphasizing the importance of inspiring students, educators, and industry professionals in the field of space exploration.
The pilot SpaceBuzz program, established through international cooperation with Erasmus+ support, has engaged thousands of students and teachers in Hungary and beyond. With the introduction of the simulation space cabin, more educational opportunities will be offered to foster a deeper understanding of space science and sustainability.
