New World-class Running Track Unveiled for Athletics World Championship in Hungary

In preparation for the highly anticipated Athletics World Championship, a brand new running track has been unveiled at the National Athletics Centre in Hungary. This significant milestone in Hungary’s sporting history comes just two months before the championship, which will be held from August 19th to 27th.

According to reports from Magyar Építők, the racetrack was officially revealed on April 26th, 2023. In May, a technical demonstration showcasing the sound and lighting of the track took place. The grand inauguration of the world-class track was held on June 16th, with Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), presiding over the ceremony.

The track features nine lanes and a Mondo surface, making it exceptionally fast. What sets this track apart is its asymmetrical surface, which provides spectators with optimal views of both running and jumping events. Coe expressed his satisfaction with the work done, noting that the builders have done an incredible job. With such outstanding facilities, the 2000 contestants from 200 different countries can expect to deliver remarkable performances.

The National Athletics Centre has been designed to accommodate 35,000 spectators. However, the stand will be dismantled after Hungary’s biggest sports event, making way for a running circle that will be one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. This ensures that both sports enthusiasts and professional athletes can continue to enjoy these world-class facilities.

During the inauguration, Coe emphasized that the athletes are in excellent shape and poised to achieve amazing results. As two-time Olympic champion Coe and the young athletes of Bp. Honvéd and Gödöllői EAC took to the track for the first-ever circle run, the event marked a significant milestone for Hungarian athletics.

Dubbed “The Crown of the Queen of Sports,” the track has garnered praise from Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Minister of Defence of Hungary, who described the National Athletics Centre as a “wonder.” He further highlighted the significant development in athletics, supported by the facility’s innovative features.

In his address, Coe revealed that the women’s 10,000m final will take place on the first day of the championship, promising an outstanding performance from athletes like Sifan Hassan and Letesenbet Gidey. On the second day, spectators can look forward to the men’s 100m flat final. Coe expressed gratitude to the Hungarian government and the capital for their support and urged enthusiastic fans to come out and support the athletes.

The World Championships will also feature the hammer throw, an event in which five out of Hungary’s ten Olympic champions in athletics have been victorious. With the opening of this remarkable new running track, Hungary is ready to host a thrilling and memorable Athletics World Championship.
