Construction of the New National Gallery Set to Begin in Budapest’s City Park Next Year
The construction of the new National Gallery is set to commence in City Park next year, with plans for the gallery to open its doors to the public by the end of the decade, according to Városliget Zrt, the company overseeing the project.
The upcoming gallery has already been granted a valid building permit, and a public procurement process has been initiated. It will be situated on the grounds of the former Petofi Hall and will house the modern collections of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery.
The new National Gallery, along with other significant national exhibition spaces dedicated to photography, ethnography, music, and visual arts, will be easily accessible along a single walking axis—an arrangement described by the company as unique on a global scale.
To make City Park a more attractive cultural quarter and put it on the cultural map of Europe, Hungary’s government is fully committed to the construction of the new National Gallery. An international jury has selected the plans submitted by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architecture firm SANAA for the project.
