New Opportunities for Hydrogen in Central Asia: Insights from Hydrogen Diplomacy Forum

The Central Asian and European Hydrogen Diplomacy Forum held in Astana on May 23 explored the potential for hydrogen development in Central Asia, along with showcasing various pilot projects in the region. Organized by the Hydrogen Diplomacy Office Astana, in collaboration with the European Union’s Sustainable Energy Connectivity in Central Asia project, the forum served as a platform for international exchange between Kazakhstan and Germany on green hydrogen initiatives.
Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry Director Gumar Sergazin highlighted the country’s unique natural resources and vast potential for hydrogen energy development. He emphasized that Kazakhstan’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the Paris Agreement, has integrated the development of hydrogen energy into its broader strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Sergazin also mentioned that hydrogen production would promote energy source diversification, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, create new economic opportunities, and position Kazakhstan as a key player in the global green energy market.
Other participants at the forum, such as Zhobir Akhadov from Uzbekistan, Rahim Abdullayev from Azerbaijan, and Soso Mindiashvili from Georgia, shared insights into their respective countries’ projects and initiatives related to hydrogen development. The discussions highlighted the potential for utilizing renewable energy sources, wind energy, and natural resources for green hydrogen production, as well as exploring opportunities for export and integration into existing industries.
Overall, the forum underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in advancing green hydrogen technologies in Central Asia and emphasized the region’s potential to become a key player in the global transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
