New Section of Motorway in Hungary Now Open to Traffic

Hungary’s newest motorway section on the M6 between Bóly and Lippó, located in southern Hungary near the border, has just been opened to traffic. This project of national importance cost almost HUF 90 billion (EUR 231 million) net. The Deputy State Secretary for Road Works made the announcement at the Bóly junction of the motorway, stating that on Thursday morning, the newest section of the M6 motorway was officially opened to traffic.

The nearly 20-kilometer section extending to Ivándárda in southern Hungary was completed by the designated deadline of January 31, with Hungarian funding provided by Strabag Építő and Duna Aszfalt. The total project was valued at HUF 88.6 billion (EUR 227 million) net.

The foundation stone for this 20-kilometer section, spanning from Bóly to Ivándárda, was laid in July of 2021. As of now, traffic can flow freely between Bóly and the Villány junction at Lippó, with the remainder of the section up to the border set to be ready for use upon the completion of the motorway extension in Croatia.

With this missing section now completed, the Hungarian motorway network has been extended to include a new border crossing with Croatia. As part of the project, three traffic junctions, 16 bridges, and a rest stop were constructed, alongside a turnkey depot featuring an office building and a gas station.

The primary aim of this new section is to establish the Hungarian segment of the Ten-T network (Trans-European Transport Network) connecting the Adriatic and Baltic Seas. The government had pledged to complete this section by 2024, a promise that has been successfully fulfilled.

The EU’s Trans-European Transport Network policy, known as TEN-T, is a crucial strategy for enhancing the development of cohesive, efficient, multi-modal, and high-quality transport infrastructure throughout the EU. It encompasses railways, inland waterways, short sea shipping routes, and roads, creating seamless transport systems across borders to promote economic, social, and territorial cohesion while reducing environmental impacts and enhancing safety.

Overall, the completion of this new motorway section represents a significant milestone in Hungary’s transportation infrastructure development, offering improved connectivity and efficiency for both domestic and international travel.
