Kazakh Scientists Discover Two New Species of Spider in Kyzylkum Desert
Kazakh scientists have recently made an exciting discovery in the Kyzylkum desert in the country’s south. Two new species of spider have been identified, adding to the rich biodiversity of the region.
The scientists from the Kazakh Zoology Institute have been studying the spiders in the desert and have identified a total of 54 species, with 27 of them being recorded in the desert for the first time. This represents over 50% of the spider species found in the area. Additionally, 10 species, accounting for 19%, have never before been documented within Kazakhstan’s borders.
According to a recent article by Kazinform, some of these newly discovered spider species can also be found in neighboring countries such as Iran, the Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
The two previously unknown spider species have been named anagraphis karamola and drassodes babenkoi, both belonging to the ground spider family Gnaphosidae. These spiders are mostly active at night and spend their days hidden in shelters such as behind stones, in animal burrows, or within crevices in rocks or the ground.
This discovery highlights the importance of continued research and conservation efforts in the Kyzylkum desert and showcases the incredible biodiversity of this unique region. The findings of the Kazakh scientists contribute to our understanding of the diverse ecosystem in the desert and provide valuable information for future studies and conservation initiatives.
