Terminator Insect Production Begins in Northern Cyprus to Combat Pine Processionary Beetle

Under the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Forestry Department, and Tashkent Nature Park, the production of terminator insects has been initiated in Northern Cyprus to combat the pine processionary beetle.

A statement from the Ministry revealed that 10 thousand terminator insects were sent to the TRNC by the General Directorate of Forestry of the Republic of Turkey. Some of these insects were brought to the laboratory as broodstock to obtain eggs, while the rest were directly released into nature. The larvae that are being grown in the laboratory are expected to be released into nature after approximately 20 days.

Özgür Toprak, Director of the Forestry Quarantine Branch of the General Directorate of Forestry of the Republic of Turkey, Department of Forest Pest Control, supervised the process. Additionally, Minister Director Reşat Değirmenci of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources visited the laboratory along with other authorities to conduct inspections.

The initiative to produce terminator insects is part of a larger effort to combat the pine processionary beetle, which poses a threat to forests and biodiversity in the region. The collaboration between different government departments and nature conservation organizations is crucial in protecting the environment and ensuring the sustainability of forest ecosystems.
