Minister of Justice Announces Arrests in Newborn Care Unit Investigation
Minister of Justice, Yılma Tunç, took to social media to provide an update on the ongoing investigation into the scandal surrounding newborn care units. According to Tunç, an investigation was initiated by the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office following complaints made to CİMER and a notification from the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate. It was reported that newborn care units were rented out and infant deaths occurred as a result of inhumane and unsuitable conditions.
As of now, 22 out of the 47 suspects involved in the case have been arrested. An indictment was filed against all 47 suspects on October 16, 2024, and the trial process is currently underway for those detained.
Furthermore, Minister Tunç revealed that an investigation is also being conducted into threats made against the prosecutor handling the case by the Yenidoğan gang. Out of the 8 suspects taken into custody, 5 have been arrested, while the remaining 3 have been placed under judicial control.
