Nicosia March Against Violence Towards Women
November 25, The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, was commemorated with a march in Nicosia, Cyprus. Various political parties and non-governmental organizations came together to form the 25 November Organizing Committee.
The march began at 16:00 in front of Kumsal Park and ended at the Republic Assembly with a joint declaration read in front of the parliament. During the march, participants carried banners and chanted slogans to raise awareness about violence against women. They also lit candles in remembrance of women and children who had died in Palestine, calling for freedom for Gaza and expressing solidarity with Palestine.
The joint statement made in front of the Parliament condemned the systematic imposition of religious reactionism and social engineering policies on the society. It also criticized the state for withdrawing from social policies, deepening poverty, and targeting women. The statement highlighted the growing incidents of violence against women, and advocated for social services, reproductive rights, and gender equality.
The organizations that participated in the event, including Alevi Cultural Center, Alevi Culture Foundation, and several other groups, emphasized their commitment to fight against discrimination and violence faced by women. The collective efforts sought to promote a democratic and equitable society, calling for various demands to be addressed by the government and relevant bodies.
