Nigerian Man Arrested for Fraud in Budapest

Nigerian Fraudster Caught by Hungarian Police in Budapest

A Nigerian man who allegedly scammed millions from his victims with the help of his accomplices has been apprehended by the Hajdú-Bihar county police in Budapest, as reported by Police.hu. The gang leader lived a lavish lifestyle, sporting expensive clothes, funding extravagant trips, and freely spending money.

The gang members reportedly utilized dating sites to target and victimize individuals. They primarily aimed at contacting wealthy middle-aged or older women, whom they sought to deceive with a premeditated script. Creating a sympathetic and caring facade, they quickly gained their victims’ trust before requesting large sums of money under false pretenses. Investigations revealed that the fraudsters successfully obtained millions from their victims in numerous cases.

Last autumn, police in Hajdú-Bihar County cracked down on Nigerian fraudsters operating in Hungary and arrested three foreign men and a Hungarian woman suspected of scamming victims globally. Among their victims was someone who had allegedly lost 70 million forints (169,700 euros) to the fraudsters.

Despite the arrests in October, the cybercrime group persisted in their activities. The police later identified a foreign national linked to the criminal organization, believed to be one of the gang’s leaders due to a significant portion of the funds being directed to him. The individual lived extravagantly, wore luxurious attire, funded lavish trips, and was a frequent presence in Budapest nightclubs, showering money around.

On January 8, detectives from the Cívis Public Support Unit in Budapest arrested a 29-year-old Nigerian man who was suspected of money laundering. It was found that the man had his girlfriend open a separate bank account to deposit the illicit funds. The Hungarian woman was questioned for her involvement in negligent money laundering and is currently free pending further legal proceedings.

The Hungarian authorities continue to take action against cybercriminals in the country, emphasizing the importance of combatting such fraudulent activities. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
