No Pardon for Child Abusers, Says Orbán

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently made statements regarding the need for the next head of state to restore national unity following the controversy over a pardon granted by the previous president, Katalin Novák. In a public radio interview, Orbán expressed his disapproval of Novák’s decision to pardon the deputy head of a children’s home who was convicted of covering up child abuse. He emphasized the importance of family values and protecting children, stating that such actions are unacceptable in a decent country like Hungary.
Following the incident, Orbán ordered an investigation that will cover the heads of all child protection services. He stated that people who pose a threat to children cannot be allowed to work in institutions such as schools, kindergartens, or children’s homes. Orbán also emphasized the need for thorough screenings of officials’ lifestyles, “sexual deviance,” and psychological fitness in order to ensure the safety of children.
Additionally, Orbán discussed the nomination of Tamás Sulyok as the next head of state, citing his experience in constitutional and legal matters, knowledge of the international stage, and professional standing as the qualities that make Sulyok a qualified candidate for the position.
In regard to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Orbán urged for a ceasefire and peace process, stating that the conflict cannot be resolved through military means and requires a diplomatic solution. He emphasized the need for a liveable Europe for the long term and stressed the importance of achieving peace in the neighboring countries.
Furthermore, Orbán voiced concerns about the state of affairs in Brussels, referring to a sense of panic as the European Parliament term ends in June. He highlighted potential decisions related to LGBTQ rights, migration, and war and emphasized the need for Hungary to defend against these issues.
In a separate discussion, Orbán addressed the differences in values between Hungary and Sweden, particularly in relation to military and weapons issues. He emphasized the need for cooperation based on interests and values, stating that while Hungary and Sweden may not share the same values, they can still enter into a military alliance based on mutual interests.
Overall, the statements made by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reflect a strong emphasis on protecting children, restoring national unity, and addressing diplomatic and political challenges both domestically and internationally.
