Non-Compliance with Legislative Provisions Leads to 16 Deaths in Earthquake
An indictment has been prepared against the contractor and static project designer of the collapsed building in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. The indictment demands imprisonment of up to 22 years and six months for each individual for the crime of causing the death of more than one person through conscious negligence. The building, Sütçü İmam 2 Apartment, collapsed and resulted in the loss of 16 lives.
The indictment includes reports of expert examination of the wreckage, core and iron sample analyzes, and minutes. It stated that the building was not in compliance with legislative provisions in the project design, construction, and work completion stages. It was also found that there were defects in the demolition of the building.
The indictment attributes primary fault to the static project designer and the contractor during the project and construction phases, while also placing secondary fault on the municipal building permits and construction control unit. It was emphasized that the suspects had negligence and faults in the demolition of the building, and that they acted with conscious negligence.
The indictment has been accepted by the High Criminal Court, and it is now up to the court to determine the outcome of the trial. This case brings attention to the importance of following regulations and safety guidelines in construction projects to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
