OIC Summit Commences with Strong Support for Palestine
The 15th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was recently held in Gambia, with President Adama Barrow hosting the event. In his opening speech, President Barrow expressed strong support for Palestine, emphasizing the need for a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict in the region.
President Barrow called for an end to Israel’s attacks in Palestine and the destructive war in Gaza, stating that the situation has caused endless human suffering for over 75 years. He highlighted the importance of finding a peaceful resolution through a two-state solution, emphasizing the need for the international community to recognize the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people.
President Barrow also commended South Africa for filing a lawsuit against Israel, expressing solidarity with all those seeking justice and accountability for the atrocities committed in Palestine. He stressed the importance of cooperation and unity within the Islamic world to address humanitarian crises and promote stability in conflict areas like Kashmir, Yemen, and Sudan.
OIC Secretary General Hüseyin İbrahim Taha thanked Gambia for hosting the summit and highlighted the organization’s role in promoting coordination and cooperation among Islamic countries. Taha called for an end to the Israeli attacks in Gaza, recognition of Palestinian rights internationally, and support for Palestine’s independence.
Taha also emphasized the need for international cooperation to combat terrorism, which he described as having a hidden agenda and fighting against religion. He shared plans to expand OIC’s work areas to address issues such as health, environment, education, sports, technology, and human rights.
The OIC, which represents nearly 2 billion people and comprises 57 member countries, is the largest international organization after the United Nations. The theme of the 15th summit, “Strengthening unity and solidarity through dialogue for sustainable development,” reflects the organization’s commitment to promoting peace and cooperation within the Islamic world.
